Direct answer: two stud earrings with the same maximum width can look different because millimetres describe physical length, not visual presence. A filled circle, an open outline, a pointed motif and a high-contrast gold detail can occupy or emphasize different parts of the same measured box. Compare height and width, the amount of metal inside that outline, contour complexity, finish contrast and at least one scale-controlled photograph. Do not use face size alone to predict weight, comfort or post fit.
Measured size and apparent presence are different questions
A product measurement answers a physical question: how many millimetres separate two defined points? Start with a bounding box, then look inside it
The simplest comparison is the face’s maximum height and width. Imagine drawing the smallest rectangle that contains the front view. Two designs can both fit inside a 10 mm by 10 mm box, yet one may be a nearly solid disc while another may be a thin open branch, crescent or outline.
The bounding box is therefore a limit, not a complete description of occupied area. It tells you how far the design extends. It does not tell you how much of that box is metal, stone, open space or dark recess.
A circular example
For a flat circular face, projected area is π × radius². An 8 mm disc has an area of about 50.3 mm², while a 10 mm disc has an area of about 78.5 mm². The diameter increases by 25%, but the face area increases by about 56%. A 12 mm disc has about 113.1 mm² of area, roughly 44% more than a 10 mm disc. These calculations describe ideal circles viewed straight on; they do not predict comfort, weight, thickness or how an irregular motif fills its outline.
That squared relationship explains why a small numerical change in diameter can produce a larger change in the amount of visible face. For an open or irregular design, however, circle area is the wrong model. Compare a straight-on image, named height and width, and the amount of negative space instead.
Negative space changes how much of the outline feels occupied
A design with large openings lets the background show through. It may extend over the same width as a solid stud but feel lighter because less of the bounding box is filled. A clustered flower, skull or textured disc can feel denser because more internal edges and surfaces remain visible.
This is not a rule that open designs always look smaller. Long tips, high-contrast edges or an asymmetric direction can make an open motif visually prominent. The useful buyer question is not “Which one is really bigger?” but “Are the listed measurements describing a filled face, an outer outline or a three-dimensional form?”
Peer-reviewed work reviewed in Vision Research’s article on contour and shape perception explains that contour detection, contour integration and shape discrimination are distinct stages of visual processing. A second controlled study of contour- and surface-defined shape patterns found that discrimination depended on scale, contour characteristics and contrast. Neither study tested earrings, so they do not supply a preferred jewelry shape. They support only the narrower point that outline and internal structure matter to what a viewer can distinguish.
Contrast can make equal dimensions look unequal
A bright motif on a dark oxidized field may attract attention to the bright center. A low-contrast motif may read as one quiet surface from normal conversation distance. Polished highlights can enlarge or fragment the visible silhouette in a photograph, while soft diffuse light may make the true edge easier to inspect.
In a controlled vision experiment, equal-size light and dark squares showed different apparent size depending on contrast polarity and contour conditions. Research on size contrast and assimilation likewise examined why identical targets can be perceived differently in different surrounding contexts. These experiments do not prove how any particular earring will look on every person. They do explain why a measurement should not be translated into a universal visual promise.
Photographs need scale and consistent framing
A product image can enlarge a 9 mm stud until it fills a phone screen. That is useful for inspecting texture, but it does not show life size. Compare images only when the crop, viewing angle and scale reference are clear.

A larger open form can weigh less than a smaller thick solid form. Post placement, depth, backing, material distribution and movement also affect wear. Do not infer grams from millimetres, and do not infer a safe or comfortable threshold from appearance alone.

Millimetres tell you physical extent; they do not fully describe visual presence.
